Project Proposal

While these types of projects are traditionally paintings, videos, songs, etc., I’d like to use a different approach. My passions do not lie in traditional art, but rather in the underrated art that is literature. I am going to create a PowerPoint that will serve as a “scrapbook”. A scrapbook is a compilation of words and pictures and memories. I would like to start with the source: literature.

Since I began reading at a young age, I would highlight passages or sentences that meant something to me. I’ll start by compiling all my books, sifting through them and finding all the words that have meant something to me over the years. After I retrieve them, I will combine the words with memories and photographs or even patterns and textures, to convey what they mean to me. By doing so, I will be combining literature and photography to create, once again, a “scrapbook”. Every slide will be the turn of a page.

Words have always been my tool, they have always been my friend, they have always been there. If I were asked what I could do for the rest of my life, there would be two answers; to read and travel. Luckily, these can be done simultaneously. This project will be very personal because when I highlight the words on a page, it is because the author was able to speak my thoughts better than I ever could.

All the books I have read in my short life are a part of me. Just like all the people I have met are a part of me. We are who we are because of everything around us. When you become friends with someone, a part of them will always be with you, even after you are no longer friends. When you read a book, a piece of that book will always be with you, even after you turn the last page. Our identities are not solely our own, but rather the combination of our experiences. Little pieces coming together over the span of a lifetime. One of my favourite authors, Cassandra Clare, once said, “We are all the pieces of what we remember.”

The project is due in the beginning of May. Given that today is March 24, that gives me approximately one month, give or take. As of March 31st, I will have compiled all my quotes. As of April 7th, I will have the rough draft of my PowerPoint. As of April 14th, all my material (meaning my photos, symbols, textures) will be compiled and added to the PowerPoint. As of April 28th, the project will be completed. The only software I’m going to need is PowerPoint.
